Southampton manager Russell Martin has addressed the exclusion of Lesley Ugochukwu, nephew of former Super Eagles defender Onyekachi Apam, from the squad during their Premier League clash with Brighton & Hove Albion. Ugochukwu, on loan from Chelsea, has struggled for regular playing time, starting only five games across all competitions this season, including just two in the Premier League.
Martin explained that Ugochukwu’s absence from the Brighton game was tactical and reassured that the 20 year old remains part of his plans. "He wasn’t in the squad he knows the reason why. Every game is different, so it doesn’t mean he won’t be in the squad moving forward. We have to assess it game by game," Martin stated.
The midfielder will be ineligible to face Chelsea in Southampton’s next fixture due to Premier League loan regulations prohibiting players from competing against their parent club.
